So as far as we are aware, Marethari held up her end. Hawke did not steal anything. She accepted a traditional reward from the Dalish Keeper who obviously felt that the human Hawke was more entitled to it than the exiled mage. Besides, you can store it at home if you feel like keeping it safe.
Shenachie talk , October 14, UTC. My Hawke just like any Hawke the way Acts 0—1 force you to play knows to bend the rules and make 'difficult decisions for difficult times', as well as and not being above temptation or stupidity. But, the problem with A New Path is that it's reasonable to suspect the 'spirit' would want something in exchange from M. Assisting a demon's plans with a thing or service would be off-limits. M would probably not sell her very soul, but who knows really; she may even already have.
Neither does a summoning if any necessarily involve a sacrificial offering or some other form of dark ritual, but the whole thing stinks even if Hawke's supposed to just be a glorified security guard for the main actor. It still makes Hawke an enabler if he's pretty much the only reason she can go through with the trip. To a lesser extent the entire work on the eluvian invites similar objections if it's going to involve a demon.
I'm not mentioning blood magic individually, pretty much because the main objection against it is that it turns to involve demons. On a different note, do friendship convos leave room for getting M to tone down on the ends-justify-means approach? I'm asking because right now my main incentive to not give her the AH relates to it being the last opportunity for a rivalry ending.
When Tamlen reached out to touch the surface, it unleashed a strange pulse of magic that knocked the player unconscious. Rescued by the Grey Warden, Duncan, the player woke two days later inflicted with a strange fever the Warden identified as the darkspawn Taint.
Returning with Merrill to the ruins to search for Tamlen, one can surmise this venture prompted what would eventually become an unhealthy obsession with the Eluvian for Merrill. Merrill took a shard of the Tainted mirror, and when the Blight forced the Dalish to flee Ferelden and head toward the Free Marches, she carried it with her and began studying it.
Her growing obsession prompted her to research the Eluvian more deeply. In time, she remembered the magic the Keeper used to cleanse the Taint from the Grey Warden player character. Marethari refused to help cleanse the shard with traditional magic, forcing Merrill to use blood magic to gain the power she needed to cleanse it. Marethari was appalled by the lengths Merrill went, worrying that her First's obsession would lead her down a dark path of no return. Ignoring the Keeper's warnings, Merrill began building an Eluvian on Sundermount and by the time Hawke arrived at the Dalish encampment in Act One of Dragon Age 2 , Merrill and Marethari were at such odds with one another that Merrill planned to leave the clan.
She brought the Eluvian with her to Kirkwall and set it up in the bedroom of her small apartment in the Lowtown alienage. She spoke animatedly about the Eluvian to Hawke, who could either encourage her obsession and gain her friendship, or side with Marethari's beliefs and begin building a rivalry with her. When Act Two rolled around, Merrill asked Hawke to travel back to the clan with her and request a special dagger called the Arulin'Holm that she believed will help her restore the mirror's power.
At least that's how I've always seen it. Both games have given lots of information to prove that there is no danger from the Eluvians.
So -- were I you -- I'd give her the Arulin'holm. When it said "I'll take responsibility", I was expecting Hawke to fess up about letting it get that far in the first place, and allowing them to blame him for the Keeper's death, not "Merrill is dangerous and she wont be hurting anyone again".
I roleplay my Tobias Hawke to only saying "I'll take responsibility" because it's what the clan wants to hear, and not what he actually believes. He knows that Merrill's in enough pain because of Marethari's death -- and the other clan members in Act II -- and he doesn't want her to be in even more pain. He knows Merrill was right the whole time. He knows Marethari was in the wrong. But he's just good at reading people and sees that the clan -- all due to Marethari's baseless lies about Merrill -- only wants a scapegoat and they'll leave.
I take it this is the same mirror that was broken in DAO and where you took a shard off so it would never be complete anyways. SiIencE Status: Offline. By Anonymous - Wed Mar 25, pm.
